12d MODEL INTRODUCTION – PREMIUM

This is the Premium version of our ‘Introduction to 12d Model’ course.
This course is for the complete beginner and includes exercises after each lesson, quizzes, and a Certificate of Attainment when you complete the course.

If you are a novice, then this is the course for you. If you have already used 12d Model, and had instruction from your colleagues, then there will be something here for you too.
When you have completed this course you will be familiar with the 12d Model user interface, be able to load and triangulate survey data and create contours for plotting and export to CAD.
You will be comfortable using the drafting tools in 12d Model, and you will have had exposure to the techniques of surface modelling for design, analysis of surface features, and calculation of earthwork volumes.

Course Outline

Start a new project, and load CAD data from the DWG format, along with survey data from 12da or XYZ and save the project.
Use the survey data to create a triangulation (TIN), then edit the TIN (remove long triangles, flip triangles etc).
Use 12d Model’s CAD tools to draw lines and arcs, create offsets and fillets.
Use 12d Model’s CAD tools to create the outline of a building pad, and generate earthwork batters from the pad to the survey surface. Triangulate the pad design, and calculate the earthwork volumes required to build the pad. Adjust the height and position of the pad to minimise and balance earthworks volumes.

Interrogate the data using the string inquire and measure tools, and display elevations and codes on-screen.
Create Contours from the TIN, plot these to pdf, and export to DWG, 12da and XYZ formats.
Analyse a ground surface to determine the parts of a site suitable for development. Colour the site based on the slope of the surface.
Calculate the volume of a stockpile and generate a report file.
Import Lidar Data into the project and interrogate it.

Course Content

TOPIC 1 – Open Existing 12d Model Project
Topic 1 Summary. The lessons in Topic 1 will show how to install 12d Model and download the training data. Once 12d Model is installed, open an existing project and input a DWG file of a Cadastral Layout. We will then move around 12d Model and explain what is available around the 12d Model screen. Then look at moving around the imported data, and adding or removing the data from the view. We will also see how we can search for commands utilitising the search toolbar.

TOPIC 2 – CAD Exercise – Cadastral Layout
Topic 2 Summary. The lessons in Topic 2 will demonstrate how to set up 12d Model to create CAD strings, like 2 point lines, line strings, 3 point arcs. TOPIC 3 – Plotting with the Quick Sheet Plot
Topic 3 Summary. The lessons in Topic 3 will show you how to create a quick plan plot from your 12d model project. Producing a simple plan drawing you can then output to your printer, along with the PDF and CADD software formats.

TOPIC 4 – Measuring and Saving Projects
Topic 4 Summary. The lessons in Topic 4 will show you how to measure by bearing and distance between 2 points, measuring by a value from a string (perpendicular) to a point or a point along a string like a chainage. The measure angle command is explained along with how to save your 12d Model project.

TOPIC 5 – New 12d Model Project
Topic 5 Summary. The lessons in Topic 5 will show you how to create a new 12d model project. In this project you will import two different data formats, the first being a 12da file and the second will be a text file containing X,Y and Z values. A mapfile will also be used during the lessons.

TOPIC 6 – Triangulation and Contouring
Topic 6 Summary. The lessons in Topic 6 will show you how to create a triangulation/surface of the survey data. Once the tin is created, how to view the tin and look at the available toggle settings for the tin. In this project you will create contours over the survey tin and look at all the options available to edit the contours.

TOPIC 7 – Create Raster Element & Exporting Data
Topic 7 Summary. The lessons in Topic 7 will show you how to create a Raster or Image from an ECW file format and how to modify the display order of Models. The lessons will also explain how to export your model data in 3 common formats including CAD (.dwg), 12daz and XYZ.

TOPIC 8 – Getting Ready for Design & Create the Design Pad
Topic 8 Summary. The lessons in Topic 8 will show you how to import a 12da file with the proposed subdivision road alignments. The construction of CAD strings by entering coordinates, bearing and distances and calculating snap locations on the fly. We then construct the starting position for the new Design Pad, and then draw the edge of the Design Pad.

TOPIC 9 – Create the Tennis Court Strings
Topic 9 Summary. Topic 9 will utilise some of the 12d Model CAD commands and snaps to provide more information and draw up the tennis courts on the Design Pad for our project. We will also look at ways to modify the properties of strings to allow users to change information at any time across the project.

TOPIC 10 – CAD Text, Symbols and Pipes
Topic 10 Summary. Topic 10 will utilise some of the 12d Model CAD commands and create single text strings, associate text to string segments. Create symbols as a single symbol or attached to a string vertex, as well as the editing options available to change the properties of the text or symbols. We will also create a string with pipe dimensions, and view it in 3D perspective.

TOPIC 11 – String Modification
Topic 11 Summary. Topic 11 will utilise some of the 12d Model CAD commands and look at how we modify the vertex of a string, by moving, extending or inserting new vertices. String edits will also be covered for moving, copying, rotating as well as joining, paralleling to name a few. We will look at how we can edit string data from the String Inquire command.

TOPIC 12 – Sharing Data between Projects
Topic 12 Summary. Topic 12 will introduce users to 12d Model Sharing. Some background is explained and the process covered to allow Project data to be shared from one project with another. The 12d sharing process opens productivity enhancements and allows for multiple 12d Users to have access to data and design simultaneously across the organisation.

TOPIC 13 – Tennis Courts – Design Pad
Topic 13 Summary. The lessons in Topic 13 will show you the steps required to create a design pad for the tennis courts. First up we will look at how to inquire the height in a "tin", followed by coping the perimeter of the pad into your current project and setting a design level to the pad. Once this is done you will create the Interface batters from the pad to the survey. You will then move into creating a design tin (triangulation) of the pad followed by viewing the pad in a perspective and section view. At the end of the topic you will be shown how to create design contours, calculating volumes and creating a Chain to automate some of the above processes.

TOPIC 14 – Supertins
Topic 14 Summary. The lessons in Topic 14 will show you how to create a Supertin from the Tins in your project and how a Supertin is useful to create. You will then be shown how you can edit your Supertin then followed by how to Contour your Supertin.

TOPIC 15 – Advanced Tin Edits
Topic 15 Summary. The lessons in Topic 15 will show you how to edit a tin in all manner of ways, from all the option in the Retriangulate Tin panel, to nulling and resetting triangles, and setting attributes to strings to include or exclude the inside data in the tin. The options for adjusting triangles - add breaklines and flip triangles will also be covered.

TOPIC 16 – Tin Analysis
Topic 16 Summary. The lessons in Topic 16 will show you how to analyse the tin for changes in slope across the tin, as well as an aspect analysis option to determine the direction of the triangles, north, east, south or west. The colour values can be tabulated into a table format for plotting or exporting.

TOPIC 17 – Calculate Stockpile Volumes
Topic 17 Summary. The lessons in Topic 17 will show you how to import a survey stockpile model via the 12daz file format, moving into creating a tin of the data then you will be calculating the fill volume in this stockpile. The final lesson will show you how to use an inbuilt routine that can automatically create the tins for you and also the volume and other useful quantities you may require.
